“Luna: New Moon” has been called a “Game of Thrones” in outer space (the novel takes place on a moon in the near future, colonized and inhabited by people from Earth), and in part this is true: Macdonald’s world is just as multiverse and detailed, and the author is just as unceremonious with his characters. However, if the fuel that drives George Martin’s novel machinery is lust and lust for power, the world of New Moon lives primarily by the laws of big business: the lunar currency pulsates in its veins, and the family clan remains the ultimate value. All this together makes Macdonald’s epic a hybrid of Ayn Rand’s “Atlanta,” science fiction, cyberpunk, and the classic family saga outlandish and utterly irresistible.
